Many times I have written in this space by the impact of digital signage is having on how businesses communicate their marketing and informational messages customers, employees and other constituents.
While digital signage attributes, including its resemblance to television, the speed and ease with which content can be updated and its ability to integrate interactive elements have all contributed to its success, there is another important reason for their growth, which often overlooked.
In particular, the size and weight of today's LCD monitors and plasma screens that were not suitable for available spaces the sample. In short, the clumsy and heavy load size TVs with picture tubes restricted and could be used. It is true that the weight and size difference between TVs and flat panel displays is not new, but it seems that as an industry, which can be prepared again to see a change in display technology open up many new places digital signage can be used and, in doing so push forward the expansion of the market.
This time, OLED technology is, or show organic light-emitting. In the R & D for at least the last 13 years, OLED technology finally reach the market as a Sony TV when launches new XEL-1 1 December. While OLED TV offers a contrast of 1 million to 1 ratio, high brightness and wide color reproduction, their claim principal to fame is probably the size and weight. The XEL-1 panel is just 0.12 inches thick.
Please do not misunderstand me. The new XEF-1 is only an 11 on TV, too small for digital signage applications. However, without a doubt is a precursor of things to come. Like plasma screens, technologies improve manufacturing. Over time, yields will rise, as do successive generations of OLED screens, each bigger than the last-will available. At some point, OLED televisions across the threshold of "that's an interesting technology" for "need 20 for my network signaling digital. "
The relevance of the size and weight growth of the digital signature should not be minimized. Only a few years ago, using television tube in digital applications such as signals, often requires special industrial grade wall or ceiling mounting brackets (think TVs hospital room). The media, by definition, restricted the options for the placement of the screens, and could be used only in places that meet the requirements of the manufacturer. Alternatively, if the assemblies were not used, special carts AV, TV or kiosks enclosures were necessary to prevent senior sample of tipping.
LCD screens Plasma radically changed the equation. The lightweight panels do not require the same types of assemblies, which means a variety of new areas previously overlooked could considered for use. The same is true for OLED displays compared to plasma screens. It's hard to imagine, but probably only a matter of years before LCD and plasma screens are "too thick" and "too heavy."
In the meantime, start OLED technology to make their presence felt and the market and probably exert pressure on the prices of LCD and plasma screens, so that even more affordable digital signage.
Sure, Sony's announcement of the XEF-1 is a first step, but is an important year in the evolution of digital signage. One day, it is probably seen as a breakthrough in making realistic digital signage communications vehicle for a greater number of companies and institutions.
